A Saturday of disc golf and photos in Canyon County, Idaho.

Today was a beautiful day for some disc golf. 1st reason, it was a Saturday, meaning no work. 2nd reason, it was only 90 degrees outside (with a forecast of upper 70′s to low 80′s for next several days! fall is coming!). 3rd reason, I took my camera with me! I didn’t get any good action shots, but did get some “highlights” shots of a course in Nampa. I’m not going to say where it is, because while it’s a fairly simple 9-hole course, with only a couple challenging holes that cross irrigation canals, there is almost never anyone else there. In other words, it is never crowded like the 21-hole course at Anne Morrison Park in Boise is.

So without further jibber-jabber, here are the better shots from today:

Hole 3. 100 yards with no fairway!

Fall in, disc! Derek's face says it all.

Hole 9. Finished 1 under par ... not bad.

All of these taken with Sigma 24mm macro on Canon EOS 7D.

NEW LENS! Well, it's new to me. Check out sample photos and video in this post.

I recently acquired another Nikon-mount lens to use for video, but this one I will for sure use for still because it’s so sharp! It’s a Sigma 24mm f2.8 macro that I bought from a seller on Craigslist locally. What a smokin’ deal! I love this lens! That lens flare wasn’t added in post by the way. There was actually little post done on this photo – added some contrast and a little bit of sharpening (was shot RAW).

Above that photo is another with the same lens, but with indoor, office lighting (I didn’t add lights, just used available light). Same story with this photo. A little sharpening and contrast added, just wanted different lighting and texture etc. on the subject for testing.

Check out a sample video (in HD!) HERE__________

Last Friday I had the honor of being a videographer for my friend and colleague Troy’s wedding. It was hot (100 degrees F) but totally worth the sweat-soaked state of my clothes throughout that afternoon and evening.

The first photo is of the garden where the ceremony took place. I edited it using the BestCamera app on my iPhone.

The second is the Groom, Troy, consulting with Chris, one of the other videographers, on something camera related probably. Troy is himself a videographer and so naturally he had three videographers using 5 cameras to capture the day in beautiful HD.

The third photo is of my 7D on a brilliant creation by Chris. It is a homemade pocket dolly (like the one Kessler makes) that allowed me to get some incredible tracking shots of the ceremony. I will be copying Chris’s design soon. it’s not as smooth or elegant as Kessler’s but it sure gets the job done!

*On an unrelated note, I just added two more Nikkor mount lenses to my video arsenal. A Nikon 200mm and a Sigma 24 mm macro. Both are old school manual focus. The Sigma is especially sharp and with a 2.8 aperture allows for a very shallow depth of field. Oh, and I payed $70 US dollars for both! Video and stills using both coming soon.

Today was a particularly difficult one in terms of focus. Even though I have more creative freedom in editing videos at work now I still had to take more breaks than normal in. This is the result of one of them. Thankfully it worked and I actually got a good amount of work done today!

Capturing other's stories in order to better understand my own.

This is not a typical hugedof.com post. There won’t be a photo showing something cool from my surroundings I recently discovered or a current event or art or experiment or whatever else I have felt was worthy of sharing on the internets. I have been challenged recently by some new coworkers (I started a new job about two weeks ago). Many of them are independent filmmakers outside of our video-production day jobs. They seem to constantly be working on music videos or short films or just seeking out new opportunities to tell a story through motion picture. I do not get the urge to do so often and I think I may know why.

I capture stories. I have always been interested in photography. My dad still has the Minolta 35mm camera that I think he got before I was born and I remember wanting to learn how to use it early on. Starting in middle school and continuing through all four years of high school I took classes on broadcast journalism. I even became the producer of the high school’s morning show that was sent out to every classroom each morning and even out to the community for whoever wanted to be up on the happenings of the town’s public high school (between 800 and 1,000 students when I was there). I had been capturing or telling other people’ stories for years and I think that is where my skills are best used. Even with my four years of film/television production (and communications theory) training during my undergrad I still gravitate toward telling other’s stories, or helping them share their stories. I have had moments of creative joy coming from creating a fictional story, but for the most part I’m not sure I’m as gifted there as those around me are.

Now to the point. Don Miller, a writer from Portland, Oregon, is putting a seminar (www.donmilleris.com/conference) in the coming months about telling a story with your life. I have read his books and really click with his thoughts on multiple subjects. What has really caught my attention though is the idea of living a good story. It is our stories that define the human experience. That said, there is a drawing – sort of – for those who would like to have travel to and entry to the seminar covered. This is my entry.

What I want to do, for at least the next chapter of my own story, is to allow others to open up to tell their stories – whether it be those who don’t often (if ever) have a voice or those who are often in public view. Each person has a story to tell. Each person has a journey they are on. I want to learn how to enable them to share their stories – to share what they have learned from life so that others may benefit from it. What I would imagine gaining from the seminar is greater depth to the ideas from Miller’s book A Million Miles in a Thousand Years and apply them to the method taken in capturing these stories, editing them, and then sharing them with the world. In the process, maybe I will have collected enough adventures, experiences, wisdom, that I could finally allow myself to be on the other side of the lens.

For more information on the seminar, check out the video below or go here: www.donmilleris.com/conference

Grace and peace,

Eric

First app I’m trying out is BestCam, which Seattle photographer Chase Jarvis had his hand in developing. So far I’m loving the possibilities.

This is the first shot with my new lens. The Canon Ef 24-70mm 2.8L is BEAUTIFUL! If natural light photos look this good I can’t wait to see what it will allow me to capture with sculpted light.

This statue, by the way, is along the Stations of the Cross pathway at Holy Apostles Catholic Church in Meridian, Idaho.

How is a log home built? Not sure, but this equipment is part of a Meridian company's method.

Wow! It has been forever since I last posted a photo. Crazy how motivation works. I have spent much of the last month either straight looking for (paying) work or learning After Effects. I have been taking pictures, but I don’t have permission to post any of them … yet. Hopefully I will soon because I’m dang proud of some of them.

In the meantime, enjoy some more of the photos from my explorations of my surroundings. This is one view of a log home construction company just across a field from my house. They make some impressive stuff, too! Check ‘em out @ http://www.precisioncraft.com/
